QUESTION:
Is a DHEA supplement safe to use for adrenal imbalance?
ANSWER:
DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenals.
DHEA supplements are currently being sold over-the-counter in varying doses to treat
muscle loss, weight gain, depression, and low libido, among other health concerns.
It is not, however, a “miracle drug” as some advertisers claim, and we do not recommend
experimenting with this hormone without the help of a licensed, qualified functional
medicine practitioner.
That said, we consider supplemental DHEA to be a safe and effective option for treating
adrenal imbalance when used correctly under the guidance of a knowledgeable practitioner.
But it’s important to bear in mind that DHEA alone cannot fix adrenal imbalance.
We do see good results when DHEA is used in conjunction with nutritional support,
lifestyle changes, and adequate rest.
