QUESTION:
Can I delay menopause?
ANSWER:
Menopause is a natural process
in women that cannot be delayed. A woman is officially defined as menopausal one
year past her last menstrual period, when the body ceases ovulating. For years the
medical community had explained that women lose eggs gradually as they age, up until
menopause. Recent research suggests, however, that stems cells may regulate this
timing more than the actual number of eggs, a theory still being explored. Either
way, aside from lessening the chances of early menopause by caring well for ourselves
nutritionally, hormonally, and emotionally, it’s most likely for us to go through
natural menopause around the same time our mothers did.
